History
Michael Petrovick Architects worked with the Walpole, NH Fire Department to design the partial renovation and expansion of their fire station headquarters. The program called for adding warm zone support areas for first responders, expanding their EMS services and vehicle bay capacity, adding an Emergency Operations Center (EOC), and providing space for future firefighter and EMS bunk rooms.  

Assumption
The renovation and expansion will enable the Department to purchase larger state-of-the-industry EMS vehicles allowing them to better serve the town. The design will complement the historic architecture of the Connecticut River Valley community. The project will provide space for hot, warm, and cool zones which control the entry and handling of carcinogen-contaminated personnel and equipment in the building.  

Approach
The renovation and expansion require separate apparatus bays for fire and EMS vehicles. Both hot zone apparatus bays will be complimented with warm zone decontamination areas flanking the centralized cool zone administration spaces.  

Alchemy
The 15,000 square-foot station includes a central two-story administration area flanked by fire apparatus bays and EMS bays with support spaces. The administration headquarters includes offices, dayroom, radio room, Emergency Operations Center (EOC), Community Room with catering kitchen, and future expansion for five bunk rooms and living spaces.
