MAPS Counseling Services

Keene, NH

History
Founded in 1973 to provide professional pastoral counseling, MAPS has steadily grown in both staff and programming. Now, offerings include counseling for children, adolescents, and families, as well as for individuals with autism spectrum disorders, those suffering from chronic pain, and those struggling with substance abuse. In 2015, MAPS was invited to relocate to the third floor of an annex building behind the United Church of Christ in Keene, New Hampshire.

Assumption
Counseling centers need to be calm, welcoming, and uplifting spaces with functional interiors. Privacy is a top priority, as is adequate personal space in communal areas.

Approach
To provide an interior fit-out, including a floor plan and practice aesthetic in a 4000 sq. ft. facility, MPA designed thirteen offices, two group spaces, a children’s therapy room, a meditation room, and a large waiting room.

Alchemy
A welcome, safe space is warmed by natural light through frosted glass and skylights. The ceiling elements offer visual “paths” inspired by MAPS’ commitment to help clients “Navigate Life’s Challenges.”

Brick House Roastery

Keene, NH

History
Built in the 1840s to house a mill manager and his family, this brick cape had become a vacant reminder of the city’s industrial past. Located on a main route into the city of Keene, its visibility lent itself to a curious transformation.

Assumption
Coffee roasting involves large machinery and dedicated space. Storage is an ongoing problem for urban roasters.

Approach
To historically repurpose this building, MPA saved the 1840’s architectural elements and added industrial touches within an energy-efficient framework. The basement and crumbling first floor joists were removed and replaced with a concrete slab with radiant heat. A damaged front façade was replaced with glass panels that operate as wide, ambient-light doorways and offer an ideal way to display the high-tech roasting process linking the building to its industrial past.

Alchemy
A decrepit building that caught the eye of dreamers and historians alike was masterfully recreated as a stunning visual invitation to the possibilities of urban renovation. The Brick House Roastery is a testament to the power of reuse, curb appeal, and utility.

Hannah Grimes Center for Entrepreneurship

Keene, NH

History
Created to foster the success of entrepreneurs in the Monadnock Region of New Hampshire, Hannah Grimes Center for Entrepreneurship promotes, through education, mentorship, and financial assistance; the key elements of establishing a thriving, sustainable local economy.

Assumption
The Hannah Grimes Center will continue to provide a much-needed space for entrepreneurship training in the Monadnock Region. Revenue is derived from workshops, incubator office space, and meeting room rentals. As a model of leadership and innovation, the interior space needed to reflect and encourage this mindset.

Approach
MPA designed an urban entrance to this brick industrial facade, providing ADA accessibility as well as street chic. Space planning for the upper floor involved a complete interior renovation which now allows for additional incubator offices and meeting space.

Alchemy
The Center has been transformed into a bright, inspiring space that sparks creativity and possibility. A welcoming entrance and modern palette add vibrancy and energy.
