A New Home for Amesbury City Hall
Amesbury, Massachusetts
The City of Amesbury recently celebrated the opening of its new City Hall at 5 Market Street, marking the transformation of an existing downtown building into a welcoming and functional home for city government.
Michael Petrovick Architects worked closely with City staff throughout the project to understand departmental needs, workflows, and the experience of both employees and residents. The goal was to create an environment that supports efficient day-to-day operations while providing an accessible, welcoming experience for community members.
The resulting interior fit-out makes thoughtful use of the existing building and furnishings while reorganizing the space to better serve City departments. Public-facing services, private offices, open work areas, meeting and conference spaces, and support functions were carefully planned to improve circulation, departmental relationships, privacy, and accessibility.
By adapting an existing downtown building rather than starting from scratch, the project provided an opportunity to give the space a new civic purpose while establishing a centralized home for City staff and services. For Michael Petrovick Architects, the project was particularly meaningful.
With MPA’s Massachusetts office located just steps away in downtown Amesbury, the opportunity to help shape a new civic space for the community we call home made the project especially rewarding. The opening of the new City Hall represents an exciting new chapter for Amesbury and a space designed to support the City, its employees, and its residents for years to come.
