Whortleberry Island: A Modern Interpretation of a Timeless Tradition

Rooted in Place. Inspired by Tradition. Crafted for Generations.

Perched on a rugged island in New Hampshire’s Lake Winnipesaukee, this three-season residence was conceived as a retreat that embraces both the beauty and the challenges of its extraordinary setting. Exposed to the elements yet commanding sweeping western views across the lake, the site called for a home that offered shelter, comfort, and durability while remaining closely connected to the surrounding landscape.

For MPA principal Michael Petrovick, the design draws upon a longstanding appreciation for the historic Great Camps of the Adirondacks. Beyond their distinctive architecture and remarkable craftsmanship, these retreats embody a profound connection to their natural surroundings. Their thoughtful integration into the landscape, use of natural materials, and celebration of the outdoors create an enduring sense of place. Equally compelling are the traditions they represent—cherished retreats where generations of families have gathered to enjoy summers together and create lasting memories. These qualities, rather than any particular architectural style, inspired Whortleberry Island.

The clients envisioned a home that felt authentic to its surroundings, blending the warmth and character of a traditional lakeside retreat with the comfort and refinement of contemporary living. Rather than replicating the architecture of the Great Camps, we sought to interpret the principles that make them so compelling: a strong relationship with the landscape, an honest expression of natural materials, thoughtful craftsmanship, and a sense of belonging to a particular place.

Anchored to the rocky shoreline, the home features expressive roof forms, carefully crafted architectural details, and an exposed timber structure that adds warmth and character to the interior spaces. Expansive glazing frames panoramic lake views, while sheltered outdoor living areas extend the home’s experience into its natural surroundings.

Every aspect of the design responds to the demands of its island location. Materials were selected for their durability and ability to weather gracefully, while interior and exterior spaces were carefully organized to balance protection from the elements with a continuous visual and physical connection to the surroundings. The challenges of the exposed setting became opportunities to shape the home’s architectural character.

The result is a home that reflects the spirit of the Great Camps while establishing an architectural identity uniquely its own. Rooted in its island setting, thoughtfully crafted, and designed to endure, Whortleberry Island offers a place for family and friends to gather, enjoy the beauty of the lake, and create traditions of their own.
