Framing the Mountains: A Home Reimagined

Untapped Potential in a Stunning Landscape
Set against the stunning backdrop of Vermont’s Green Mountains along the Connecticut River Valley, the home sits on a remarkable site but lacked spaces that fully connected with its surroundings. Interior living areas were constrained, reducing opportunities to gather, entertain, and enjoy the sweeping views. At the same time, key aspects of daily use—such as entry, circulation, and functional support spaces—fell short in delivering the ease and comfort the clients wanted. The challenge was to expand the home to boost livability and create a stronger connection to the landscape while keeping its original architectural character.

A Layered Approach to Living and Landscape
The home was carefully positioned and arranged so that each main space offers a clear and impressive view of the mountains—an essential feature to keep. Our design process built on this idea, ensuring all new areas are similarly oriented toward the landscape while being precisely adjusted to avoid blocking or reducing the views from the original rooms.

A new three-season sunroom, expanded dining area, and reimagined deck create a layered sequence of light-filled spaces that both frame and blend into the surrounding scenery. These features are thoughtfully placed and sized to maintain view corridors, ensuring the landscape experience remains uninterrupted throughout the home.

The selective reconfiguration of the garage creates a welcoming second entryway, featuring a stylish portico and a highly functional mudroom, enhancing daily routines and easing movement. On the lower level, expanding into unfinished space adds a new bedroom, increasing the home’s capacity while preserving a consistent architectural style.

Throughout, the new work matches the home’s existing scale, material palette, and massing, creating a seamless integration that enhances—rather than competes with—the original design intent.

Everyday Living, Elevated by Design
The result is a more spacious, intuitive, and highly livable home—one that fully embraces its remarkable setting without compromise. The clients now enjoy a series of warm, welcoming spaces that support both everyday living and gatherings, all while maintaining and enhancing the home’s essential connection to the mountain landscape. By balancing architectural consistency with thoughtful transformation, the project delivers a home that feels both elevated and effortless, enriching daily life through clarity, comfort, and a sense of place.
