Perched on a hilltop meadow with expansive views of Mount Monadnock, this 1970s California-style ranch was reimagined to better connect the home to its remarkable setting. The original layout—defined by small, compartmentalized rooms—limited daylight and obscured views. What began as a kitchen renovation quickly evolved into a comprehensive transformation of the primary living spaces.

The design removes most interior partitions to create an open, flowing plan that captures natural light and frames panoramic vistas from nearly every room. The kitchen was relocated to bring light into the home’s core, while utility spaces were strategically positioned along the north side to maximize southern exposure and glazing.

A full energy retrofit significantly improved performance, including enhanced insulation, high-performance windows and doors, and upgraded mechanical systems with future solar readiness. Passive design strategies play a central role: southern orientation supports winter solar gain, while overhangs, pergolas, and steady hilltop breezes provide natural cooling in warmer months—eliminating the need for air conditioning.

Balancing sustainability, comfort, and long-term value, the project transforms an outdated structure into a bright, efficient, and enduring home that is deeply connected to its landscape.
