Whortleberry Island: A Contemporary Great Camp

Rooted in Place. Crafted for a Lifetime.

Perched on a rugged island in New Hampshire’s Lake Winnipesaukee, Whortleberry Island was conceived as a three-season retreat designed to embrace both the challenges and opportunities of its extraordinary setting. Exposed to the elements yet commanding sweeping western views across the lake, the site called for a home that offered shelter, comfort, and durability while remaining deeply connected to the surrounding landscape.

The clients envisioned a residence that felt authentic to its surroundings—a home that captured the enduring spirit of a mountain-lake retreat while reflecting a high level of craftsmanship and refinement. Our response drew inspiration from the historic Great Camps of the Adirondacks, reinterpreting their timeless principles through a contemporary lens.
Anchored to the rocky shoreline, the home is composed of natural materials, expressive roof forms, and carefully crafted architectural details that forge a strong connection to the land. Expansive glazing frames panoramic lake views, while sheltered outdoor spaces extend the living experience into the landscape. The exposed timber structure is central to the architectural expression, lending warmth, character, and authenticity while celebrating the traditions of refined rustic building.

Every aspect of the design was guided by a commitment to place. Materials were selected for their durability and weathering qualities, enabling the home to age gracefully within its environment. Interior and exterior spaces were thoughtfully organized to balance protection from the elements with a continuous visual and physical connection to the water, forest, and sky.

The project also reflects a personal dimension of our practice. The Adirondack Great Camps have long inspired us, shaping an architectural approach grounded in craftsmanship, permanence, and deep respect for the landscape. Early experiences in the Adirondacks fostered an appreciation for how these remarkable retreats offer both refuge and a connection to nature—a sensibility that informed every stage of the design process.

The result is a home that turns the constraints of its island setting into defining strengths. It is a residence that feels timeless yet deeply rooted in its surroundings—an enduring retreat shaped by tradition, crafted with intention, and designed to belong to the landscape for generations.
